Why Are My Worms Constantly Dying?

Help! My worms are constantly dying and I don't know why?
Lorna. Maroubra.

Hey Lorna, the key is to learn a little about the biology and living requirements of your compost worms. Worms are thin skinned, eat most things that were once living except acidic and very pungent foods like citrus skins and onions and need their environment to be about as moist as a squeezed out kitchen spounge. They don't like it too hot and are sensitive to light which is why they live just under the surface where there is decaying plant and animal matter and plenty of air whilst still being nice and dark.

Worms like a sunny spot when the weather is cool or they slow down a lot but that same sunny spot can cook them in summer. If you don’t feed them enough their population will grow very slowly but if you feed them too much you get ‘sour bedding’ which can either kill them or make them leave home pronto. Only feed them as much in a week as they can get through and increase the food supply gradually as their numbers build up. When you are getting it right you will start to notice little match head sized eggs that look like tiny onions – you will get about 5 new worms from each of these eggs so your numbers will build up rapidly then. Try to get these living conditions right and if you are still having troubles get back to me with some more info about what and how much you are feeding them. There are always others having the same common problems as you.

Good luck!
